Paint Ball: Not Just for Kids
By Bekah Oester

Unleash colorful aggression with paintball.
Video games, text messaging, social
media, paintball; the list of activities
no longer considered off limits to
adults continues to grow. While paintball
might have begun as a way for kids to
continue playing cops and robbers through
adolescence and into young adulthood, it’s
become an outlet for people of all ages to get
out and do their best Rambo impression.
If you’ve never played and want to learn
the game, drop by one of the two local
venues: Breckenridge Farms in Linkwood or Delmarva Paintball in Salisbury. If
you don’t want to play alone on your first outing, bring some friends if it
would make you feel more comfortable. “Most people come with a small
group of friends when they play for the first time,” says Dan Wallace, owner of
Delmarva Paintball. “After breaking the ice with a game or two, people are very
comfortable stopping by on their own.” Chip Fleming of Breckenridge Farms
agrees: “Oftentimes, there are players who come solo and join in on games
with other groups as they begin and end their games.”
Like billiards or darts, there are many paintball games from
which to choose. Breckenridge Farms currently has three
playing fields of varying sizes and arrangements of obstacles,
and there are plans for adding more fields in the future.
Wallace says the most obvious differences in game types
come from the playing field size. “The size of a paintball field
can vary from a 120-by-80-foot grassy area to hundreds of
acres of wooded land,” he explains. In addition to size, the
objects one can hide behind—which are referred to as
“bunkers”—vary depending on the game type. For instance,
the game of airball features colorful, inflatable bunkers. In
woodsball, the bunkers are natural elements like trees, bushes,
and mounds of dirt. Like many outdoor activities, paintball can be played
either recreationally or competitively.
Even though seasoned players may spend a small fortune on their own
equipment, there is no need to worry about high costs at these facilities. They
offer rental of all the equipment you need, including the guns, paintballs, and
helmets, for a reasonable fee. Just show up wearing clothes that you won’t
mind turning into a colorful work of art, and then go for it.
